🔦 Highlights
🪄 Spells
One big idea we’ve learned each week, shaped into words you can carry forward.
One marketing person, but 8 jobs?
The overlapping problem
Over the past two months, we’ve sat down with more than 30 SME owners.
Different industries. Different goals. Different stages of business.
Some were just starting out. Some were already established.
But despite all the differences, the same few marketing problems kept appearing over and over again.
See the thing is, the businesses are not bad.
Most of them actually had strong products, good intentions, and owners who genuinely cared.
The problem usually came from the approach.
Here are some of the most common overlaps we noticed.
1. Copying competitors too closely
First of all, competitor research is good.
It makes sense why business owners do it. You want to know what’s working in the market, what people respond to, what trends are moving.
That’s normal.
The issue starts when research slowly turns into imitation.
One business starts posting a certain way, then suddenly everyone uses the same visuals, same captions, same editing style, same promos.
Eventually every brand starts blending into each other.
And when everyone looks the same, the only thing left to compete on is price.
The businesses that stand out usually understand one thing well:
Their branding comes first.
How they sound.
How they look.
How they behave.
Once that becomes clear, the marketing becomes clearer too.
2 - Hiring one marketing person to do everything
This one usually comes from practicality.
SME owners are trying to save cost while still wanting the business to grow. Completely understandable.
But sometimes the expectations become too wide for one person.
One marketing hire suddenly becomes the:
Photographer.
Videographer.
Editor.
Designer.
Strategist.
Social media manager.
Copywriter.
Producer.
These are completely different skillsets.
Even in agencies, these are separate roles handled by different people.
Over time, two things usually happen.
The person gets stretched too thin.
And the marketing becomes reactive instead of strategic.
They’re capable, yes, but…
There’s just too much happening at once.
What tends to work better is having a small in-house team that deeply understands the business, while agencies or specialists help execute and strategise alongside them.
Your internal team understands the customers, sales patterns, and daily business signals.
The agency helps bring ideas to life with a full creative and strategic team behind it.
3 - Letting personal taste lead the marketing
This one comes from passion.
Business owners care deeply about what they build. Of course they do. The business is personal to them.
So naturally, they want to be involved in the marketing too.
But sometimes personal preference starts becoming the direction.
“This colour feels nicer.”
“I don’t like this style.”
“I wouldn’t watch this.”
The problem is, the target audience may completely disagree.
Marketing was never meant to attract the owner.
It’s meant to attract customers.
Sometimes the best marketing decisions are the ones that feel unfamiliar to the business owner, but completely natural to the audience they’re trying to reach.
That’s why trust matters.
You hired the marketing team for a reason.
Let them market.
And use your energy to continue building the business itself.
A reminder
A lot of marketing problems don’t actually come from posting too little.
Sometimes it’s positioning. Sometimes structure. Sometimes understanding the audience wrongly from the start.
More content won’t solve confusion.
Clear direction will.

TCG Weekend!
These days, happiness comes sealed in a mystery pack.
So when there’s a TCG event in KB, you already know the deal — for some, it’s a bit of a commute, for others, it’s basically a homecoming.
Either way, the real question is: what did you pull?
We’re pretty sure our fellow collectors walked away with some exciting hits… maybe even your dream card.

Unpacking time!

Happy faces
Friday Eat Eat
Our Friday food tradition continues! Last week, we made our way to Sumbangsih Mulia and Tungku to grab lunch and drinks for the team. This time, the food squad consisted of Stephanie, Judin, Aiman, Hisham, Aaqilull, Amal, and Imamull, who took charge of picking up all the food and drinks. Thanks for keeping the tradition alive!

Welcome, Selene!
This week, we’re excited to welcome Selene from Cosmopolitan College of Commerce & Technology (CCCT) to the team! She’ll be joining us for the next six months as a media intern, diving into the world of production under the guidance of Aaqilull Qhaeer.
It’s also our first time hosting an intern from CCCT — so we’re especially excited to kick things off together.
Here’s to new beginnings, lots of learning, and watching Selene grow over the next few months ✨

Onboarding session
Lakastah ke AICREATIVV!
All hands on deck this Wednesday as we welcomed close to 50 CCCT students to the agency. We divided ourselves into 5 different stations so that we’re able to showcase all the different tasks that we, as a creative agency do on a daily basis.
We spent the morning with Miss Hannan and the Level 5 HND Graphic Design students, then wrapped up the day with Sir Sharil, Sir Fadwa, and the Level 3 Creative Media students.
A packed day of sharing, learning, and a little glimpse into agency life. We hope it was an insightful visit for them and that they’ve learnt a thing or two about what it’s like to work in the creative agency.

Afternoon session with Lvl 3 Diploma in Creative Media

✨ Recommendations
Things we’re loving lately, because inspiration hides where you least expect them.
Bytenscupcake
Recently, we ordered from @bytenscupcake to celebrate a special occasion at the office, and it came highly recommended by Iman Shamsudin! According to Iman, her family has been a longtime fan and always orders their cakes because they're just that good. Their favourite flavours are Lemon Blueberry and Victoria Sponge, and after trying them ourselves, we can definitely see why they're so popular! 🤍
Xdinary Heroes
Selene recommends the K-pop rock band Xdinary Heroes, particularly tracks from their latest album, DEAD AND. Her top three picks are X ROOM, Helium Balloon, and Rise High Rise. What draws Selene to the band's music is its sentimental and nostalgic quality, with songs that evoke strong emotions and lasting memories. Interestingly, she first discovered Xdinary Heroes through a friend's recommendation, who felt that the band's style closely matched her taste in music. After giving them a listen, Selene quickly connected with their sound and has been a fan ever since.
