This week, we're adding more pages to our Spellbook. Here's what we'll be talking about:

🔦 Highlights

🪄 Spells

One big idea we’ve learned each week, shaped into words you can carry forward.

Leading with trust

The urge to step in

When you lead a team, your instinct is to step in.

Someone asks a question.
You answer.

Someone shows a draft.
You comment.

Someone hesitates.
You solve.

For a long time, that felt like the right thing to do. Leaders solve problems. Leaders move things forward.

But over time, I started noticing something.

When answers arrive too quickly, people stop searching for their own.

The room becomes quieter.

The idea is someone will say something,
so it’s better to not say anything at all.

And very often, that someone was me.

Leaving space

Since late last year, I’ve been doing it different.

Speaking a little less.

Listening a little longer.

Letting the room sit with the question before jumping in.

And when there’s space in the room, something changes.

People step in.

Someone suggests an idea.
Someone else builds on it.
Another person finds a better angle.

Questions turn into discussions.
Discussions turn into solutions.

The room keeps moving.

I still feel the urge to jump in sometimes. Old habits take time to soften.

But the more space appears, the more the team fills it.

Leaving me with room to think about systems.
To think about the business itself.

What actually helps

When we talked about trust in the office, we also started noticing what makes it easier for people to step up.

Things that help

Clear briefs.
Clear ownership of tasks.
Room to try ideas without immediate judgement.
Conversations that stay focused on the work.
Trust that mistakes will be treated as part of learning.

When these exist, people naturally take responsibility.

They show up with ideas.
They solve things faster.
They care more about the outcome.

You can feel the shift in the room.

What slows it down

We also noticed a few things that quietly slow teams down.

Things that don’t help

Hovering over every step.
Checking everything too early.
Turning every discussion into a correction.
Jumping to conclusions before hearing the full thought.

When these happen, people become careful.

Ideas arrive slower.
Energy drops.
Work isn’t that fun.

Creativity needs oxygen.

And oxygen often comes from space.

A note for the team

So this part is simply a thank you.
(If the team is reading, that is.)

To the team that keeps bringing ideas to the table.
To the team that pushes each other to do better work.
To the team that carries projects forward without waiting for instructions.

Trust only works when the people receiving it take it seriously.

And you have.

Watching everyone grow into their roles has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.

The office feels different these days.
Thank you for giving a shared sense of responsibility.

Thank you for showing up the way you do.

What are they looking at?

Full House in Tutong

Imamull hosted the team for a sungkai gathering at his home in Tutong, where everyone showed up dressed their best. It was a full house — with interns, as well as his family and relatives joining in for the evening.

The night was filled with little moments: a surprise belated birthday celebration for Liza, a horror movie session led by Faiqah (which had everyone stationary in front of the tv), and ending things with a round of fireworks.

A wholesome night, good food, and even better company.

Happy birthday, Liza!

Fly With Moom

Haziyah and Batrisyia spent their Sunday afternoon at FLY Movement for the second Move with Moom session hosted by Kinship. This time, participants got to try aerial hammock yoga, guided by Charlotte — equal parts challenging and fun.

Raf and Judin joined in for the second half, where the session shifted into a more mindful note, with a sharing by @nourishbyshaz on curating balanced iftar and sahur plates. A well-rounded afternoon of movement, learning, and #ForHealth moments.

One with Charlotte!

Elroy at ASEAN Future Forum NextGen Workshop 2026

Elroy Ramantan presenting during the workshop

Elroy Ramantan recently represented Brunei at the ASEAN Future Forum NextGen Workshop 2026 in Jakarta — a two-day programme bringing together young leaders from across ASEAN and the UK. Organised by the UK and the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, the workshop focused on understanding ASEAN systems and future directions, with discussions on key regional issues such as digital governance, energy, and security. Through simulations, negotiations, and hands-on activities, participants were given a glimpse into real ASEAN-style decision-making.

Alongside 23 other youth delegates, Elroy explored how young people can contribute to the region’s future, leading up to a Youth Roundtable in Hanoi where a Youth Vision Statement 2030 will be developed. Big congratulations to Elroy (and fellow Bruneian representative Nur Farah Aliaa) for flying the flag and being part of shaping conversations for ASEAN’s future!

At its core, design is about helping people understand. For BDCB’s Centsibly: Smart Money Habits, our creative team (Amal Osmera, Iman Shamsuddin & Stephanie Yong) had the opportunity to work on a teaching resource built to support financial literacy across Brunei. Developed alongside the Ministry of Education, Centsibly translates important topics like budgeting, saving, debt, takaful, insurance and digital finance into a structured booklet accessible and practical for students, educators and anyone looking to better understand financial literacy. Our role as a creative team was to shape how these ideas are experienced and understood. That meant creating structure in how information flows, how concepts are broken down and how visuals support learning (not distract from it). Similar to the world of UsinWise, Centsibly extends a familiar tone into a more guided, educational format, bridging everyday financial content with structured learning. A big part of this came from Stephanie Yong, who led the core visual structure and layout, while Amal Osmera and Iman Shamsuddin refined, reviewed and ensured clarity across the final output. Projects like this remind us that good design communicates clearly and helps people walk away with a new understanding. See more of the design here: https://lnkd.in/g3JwYtjS Grateful to Brunei Darussalam Central Bank and the Ministry of Education Brunei for trusting us on this project.

Recommendations

Things we’re loving lately, because inspiration hides where you least expect them.

Are We Friends? Podcast

Raf Zaini recommends a podcast by Adam and Izzy — her go-to listen when she wants something light and easy. She enjoys it because it feels like you’re part of a group conversation, with episodes covering everyday topics like health, travel, recommendations, and funny moments. A casual, comforting listen you can put on anytime.

Nekograms

Nuur Batrisyia Ali recently subscribed to Apple Arcade and has been putting us onto Nekograms — a cute, cat-themed puzzle game that’s simple, satisfying, and slightly addictive. Perfect for quick breaks in between work (or when you just need a little serotonin boost).

Everything Brunei

Brunei's first all-in-one app! As the only local search engine for Brunei, you can find movies, restaurants, record community issues, local news and more!
