This week, we're adding more pages to our Spellbook. Here's what we'll be talking about:

🔦 Highlights

📌 Audience, not customers

1000 True Fans

“All companies have customers. Lucky companies have fans. But the most fortunate companies have audiences.”—Jason Fried and David Hansson, Rework

Customers pay for your products, but an audience gives you their time and attention. They talk about your brand, protect your reputation, and support you fully.

Kevin Kelly’s idea of “1000 True Fans” shows this perfectly. True fans buy everything you create, travel to see you, and enjoy all your content.

“If you want loyal customers, be loyal to your customers.”—Johnny Earle, founder of Johnny Cupcakes

Reframing your content

Here’s how you can serve your audience:

  • Be Generous: Offer value without expecting anything back.

  • Improve Lives: Help your audience through your products and services.

  • Look Out for Them: Always have their best interests in mind.

  • Teach Something New: Share useful information in a your own way.

Do this consistently throughout all your platforms, you will definitely turn your customers into an audience.

📌 Features vs Benefits

The Difference

Features tell you what your product, service, or organization can do, like its price, size, and specs. Benefits show what it can achieve and how it makes people feel good. Advantages are the link between features and benefits.

Breaking It Down

In This Is Marketing, Seth Godin explains it with a drill bit. A diamond edge is sharp (feature), so it can drill through more materials (advantage), helping you finish a DIY project and feel proud (benefit). Understand what your customers think. Be where they look. Give them what they want.

Here are three more examples:

  • Chill Cafe with Good Coffee: A cozy cafe offers high-quality coffee beans (feature), ensuring a rich and flavorful cup of coffee (advantage), creating a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere for customers (benefit).

  • Insulated Bottle for Athletes: An insulated water bottle keeps drinks cold for 24 hours (feature), helping athletes stay hydrated during workouts (advantage), making them feel refreshed and energized (benefit).

  • Insurance Consultation Service: A personalized insurance consultation provides expert advice tailored to individual needs (feature), helping clients choose the best coverage (advantage), giving them peace of mind and security (benefit).

📌 Targeting “Everyone”

Let me explain why you can't please everyone.

Surprisingly, many brands and businesses aim for this. Trying to create content or visuals that appeal to everyone can make you lose your brand identity.

Would you rather be a stranger to many, or have a loyal community?

Here’s a tip: Have a target audience. And I don’t mean just demographics, age, or gender. That’s too superficial.

Focus on understanding their

  • Lives,

  • Struggles

  • Dreams

What’s their day like? What’s their story? What motivates them? Learn to speak their language.

Narrow your focus to widen your impact.

Create content that specifically resonates with these people.

Soon, you’ll find yourself building a community without even realizing it.
