This week, we're adding more pages to our Spellbook. Here's what we'll be talking about:

One big idea we’ve learned each week, shaped into words you can carry forward.

The great thing that happened this month is that I see a lot of purple in our calendars. For the first time in a long time, people are taking breaks again. Some for a few days, some for a week, and even almost two weeks.

There's something great happening in October. Despite the busy stretch that spilled over from September, we closed a lot of projects beautifully. They all went off pretty well wherever they were supposed to be posted, and we're getting a lot of inquiries and great feedback, all the way from Thailand, for one of the books we made for KAICIID. That one was done by our Creative Designer, Majidah, and you can see it on our portfolio.

You see, I never approve holidays. The team can simply tell everyone they're going, plot it on the calendar, and trust that everyone will readjust. The only rule is that the work has been done, or has been passed responsibly to those who are left.

It's refreshing to see at least 40% of the team taking turns going on breaks. At first I was worried. But productivity has increased two-fold instead, in all areas and departments. I think this goes back to knowing that rest is as important as working.

Those who were about to go on leave were so motivated to finish things, but not with a rushed quality. Those who came back, came back with ideas. Those still on leave are sending funny pictures from their travels of things that remind them of the office. And those who decided to take their break here, funnily enough, come to the office after working hours just to chill.

Those who stayed, even the ones not used to talking to clients, decided to try their best and cover for the ones who left. Even when it was uncomfortable, it became funny stories of how they had to reiterate three times before clicking send, with sweaty armpits.

I'm happy with this level of trust. And that cannot happen from one person. It happens with one whole team.

Makasero, "I leave it to you", has been our motto this year. We wrote about it back in Spellbook 37.

After some well deserved time off, Elroy, Amal, Imamull, Aaqilull and DB are finally back in the office! We hope the break did you all some good because, well… the office is already preparing to say goodbye to a few more familiar faces.

This time, Haziyah, Hafiz, Raf and Judin will be taking their turn OOO as they get ready for a very special milestone: Raf and Judin’s wedding at the end of the month!

From one round of holidays straight into wedding prep, October really said nobody’s staying in the office for too long. Wishing you all a smooth time getting everything ready, and we can’t wait to celebrate with you both!

Elroy had the opportunity to fly to Bangkok over the weekend to witness the launch of Cerita Kita (Vol. 2), a book brought to life with illustrations done entirely by our very own Majidah!

We’re incredibly proud to see our work travel beyond Brunei and reach new audiences, and even more excited to see Majidah’s illustrations come together with the stories written by the book’s authors. Congratulations on the launch, and amazing work, Maj!

Looks like Sapek has officially unlocked his first Friday Feast delegation! Our newest media team member finally volunteered to take on food duty, bringing along two fellow media comrades, Alfath and Selene, to help with the mission.

The trio returned with a delicious spread to fuel the team and keep our tummies happy. A special shoutout to Selene’s dad for also preparing some homemade baked macaroni for everyone to share. Nothing says Friday Feast quite like good food and a little homemade love. Thank you, guys!

We’ve been on a roll with our Off Brief short films! Group A and Group B have officially released theirs, leaving just one team still shrouded in mystery… Group C.

What happened to Reality? Are they still in the editing room, cooking up something unexpected or making us wait for the dramatic reveal?

The other two groups have shown us what they’ve got, so now the question is… Group C, where’s your short film? We’re waiting!

The media team has been keeping busy lately, catching up on deadlines and working through post-production for several ongoing projects! Last Wednesday, Alfath, Sapek, and Raf headed to UNN for a colocation shoot. Then, last Friday, Judin and Hisham made their way to Bandar Eco Park to film a traditional dance video for PGGMB. The shoot even drew quite a bit of attention from tourists passing by, turning the location into a little crowd-puller! The same evening, the rest of the media team continue filming for BDCB Scam Awareness, can’t wait to see the final result.

Things we’re loving lately, because inspiration hides where you least expect them.

Cutesy Lane is back at Rimba Point, and this time, they’re bringing us the Konbini Edition! If you’re a fan of convenience stores, cute finds and all things artsy, consider this your sign to drop by and have a look around.

Psst… Parallel Play will be there too! Although Haziyah won’t be making a physical appearance this time, her creative collective will still be bringing the goods. You might also spot our former intern Zai at the event, so come show them some love and support our local creatives!

Last Monday, Encore Theatre invited us to experience a trial run of their upcoming immersive theatre experience inspired by the classic game of Cluedo called The Disappearance of Boddy Schwarz! As first-timers, Elroy, Selene, Judin, and Raf had a blast stepping into the world of mystery, joining the investigation, and working together to crack the case.
