This week, we're adding more pages to our Spellbook. Here's what we'll be talking about:

🔦 Highlights

🪄 Spells

One big idea we’ve learned each week, shaped into words you can carry forward.

2 weeks. 0 yeses.

After 2 weeks of separate meetings, we had 0 yeses.

We've been through hundreds of meetings before this, and sometimes it's still not easy to get a no. As the business team, we know a no can optimistically be read as "next opportunity". There's always a reason for everything. But sitting on the business side, we felt we had to be critical about it.

So we sat down for a sync. We went through the conversations we'd had with potential clients, looked at where it could have gone wrong, and where we could have changed our approach. It turned out to be one of the best talks we've had as a team.

Here's what we learned.

Understand, not sell

Sales can be smelt from a mile away. The moment we try to sell, people run, and that's normal. You would say no to the person trying to sell you skincare as you ride up the escalator in a mall.

So we should always seek to understand first. Only then can we help.

Our services are a set of packaged solutions, but the meeting isn't there for us to pitch them. It's there for us to pull out what they're going through, and to see whether what we offer can actually help. If it can't, we shouldn't push it. We'd rather point them to another agency or freelancer who can solve their problem.

Relationships first

We could promise the moon and the stars to a client and still not get a yes. Why? Because people work with people they feel comfortable with. You wouldn't leave a doctor you've seen for 10 years for one with better credentials, and that's normal.

Relationships also don't end when the meeting does. Be genuine with the connection, they're friends too.

Money is naturally just a consequence of helping others in business.

Be your better self

Self-doubt, questioning ourselves internally, is another layer we need to break. There's no point performing if you don't know. The whole point of the meeting is to understand them, not to look smart.

The fear of looking dumb stops us from breaking that professional facade, and it risks us not knowing what we're helping to solve. We've written about that fear before, in Spellbook 59. Be comfortable with not knowing, asking and clarifying. Big words don't help.

Have a normal conversation, and it will flow.

I think this is super useful for anyone in the service industry. I hope this helps.

Questions worth thinking about

  • When did we last ask a question in a meeting that made us look like we did not know?

  • If a client's problem is not one we solve, who would we send them to?

  • Which of our last conversations felt like a pitch, and which felt like a normal conversation?

Pondering…

Congratulations, IBTE!

It feels like just yesterday that Syed Inayat, Farah Yasmin and Hariisah Halwa joined us as interns. Back then, they were part of our everyday office life, and now, here we are, celebrating them as graduates!

The team headed down to ICC to reunite with Syed and Yasmin in person, while Hariisah joined us through a video call. Even though we couldn’t all be in the same place, it was lovely to catch up, see their familiar faces again and celebrate this milestone together. Seeing them in their graduation robes made the moment feel extra special, a little reminder of how much can change since their time with us.

To Syed, Yasmin and Hariisah, we’re so proud of you and grateful to have been a small part of your journey. Congratulations on this well deserved milestone! We’ll always be cheering you on, wherever life takes you next.

What are the media team up to now?

From the studios to the outdoors and even the hospitals, the media team has been everywhere but the office lately. They’ve spent almost the entire week out and about, covering a corporate client’s sports event and taking on something new: podcast production!

Safe to say, they’ve been keeping busy. here’s hoping the team gets some much-needed rest this weekend before the next adventure rolls around!

Haziyah’s Double Win!

As part of the Spellbook team, allow Haziyah a moment to brag about herself this week. Not only has she returned from her holiday, but she’s also officially transitioned into a full time employee!

Two wins in one week? We love that for her. Congratulations, Haziyah! Here’s to more adventures, more achievements and hopefully fewer reasons to check her out of office status.

Welcome to AICREATIVV Town!

Imamull’s been finding ways to make productivity a little more exciting for the team, and his latest project has us building a whole world of our own! Think The Sims meets Pet Society, but make it AICREATIVV. Every team member gets their own little chibi, while our very own island brings the studio’s daily operations to life, from the Meeting Hall and Quotation Press to the Projects Tower, Invoice Bank and even the Kopi Corner.

But it’s not just a cute little virtual town! AICREATIVV Town brings our quotes, invoices, projects and team activities together in one place, giving us a visual overview of what’s moving, what needs attention and who’s working on what. Who knew keeping the whole studio on the same page could look this adorable? Now, if only our real office came with this many tiny buildings.

✨ Recommendations

Things we’re loving lately, because inspiration hides where you least expect them.

Ghosts

This week, Hafiz recommends Ghosts on Netflix! The show follows a couple who inherit an old mansion, only to discover that it comes with a few… uninvited roommates. The mansion is home to ghosts from different eras, each with their own quirky personalities and hilarious antics.

if you’re looking for something lighthearted with a whole lot of chaotic ghost behaviour, this might just be your next binge-watch!

Agents of Mystery

Another Netflix recommendation, this time from Raf! Agents of Mystery is a show she put Selene onto, and one Haziyah has watched before. Think reality TV meets an elaborate escape room, where a team of celebrities work together to solve mysteries through immersive, puzzle-filled missions. Basically, watching people panic over clues so you don’t have to.

Featuring Karina from aespa, John Park and Hyeri from Girl's Day and even Gabee from Lachica (and more!), this one's worth checking out if you enjoy a good mystery or immersive experience. time to put those brain cells to work — who's solving the case with us?
